So raise your hand if you are tired of walking it out and cranking dat?
Thankfully, one woman is about to be our superhero and save the hip hop community by combining the illest lyrics with the most danceable club beat your ears have ever heard. Kid Sister is hip hop enough to make you bounce, yet club enough to make you dance. Her song, “Pro Nails” has already hit the mtvU circuit and has been remixed by our favorite preppy hip hop artist, Kanye West. She will also be performing at this year’s SXSW and Coachella.
While “Pro Nails” is undoubtedly hot and catchy, it does not do justice for first time listeners. Kid Sister is much more unique and high energy than that song, which (not to mention) has a hook very reminiscent of Mike Jones’ “Back Then”. Songs such as “Control” and “Telephone” do a better job of letting listeners know how talented and original this artist is. I personally love “Telephone” because not only is the beat amazing, but the lyrics sound like one of my girls being harassed by some guy she met at a club (“Oh my GAWD I can’t believe he’s calling me again! Why?! I don’t even like you!”). It’s always a plus when you can relate to an artist’s lyrics, no matter how ridiculous (yet true) they are.
What I’m trying to get at is Kid Sister is, above all, creative and unique. Her lyrics may not be as politically heavy as Public Enemy’s or as poetic as Pac’s, but her music is undoubtedly reinventing the hip hop genre. She’s basically bringing the art back in to hip hop.
While trying to think of who this artist compares to in order to put things in to perspective for you all, the first artist that came to mind was M.I.A., with her song “Boyz”. Like “Boyz”, Kid Sister’s songs are so upbeat and danceable that as soon as the track flows out your speakers, you’re going to try to bust out any and all dance moves that you know. With that said, I challenge all of you out there to listen to Kid Sister’s songs and not, at any moment, dance. Minor head bobs are also forbidden. Kid Sister is so original and fun that I really don’t think this challenge will have a winner…

She is pretty dope and I think she’s really emblematic of the whole Chicago scene blowing up. From the Cool Kids, Flosstradamus (J2K is Kid Sis’ brother), Hollywood Holt, and a bunch of others, I think we’re gonna continue to see them explode. Love how you bring up lyrics because that use of playful subject matter instead of the anti-war or fuck the government attitudes is something I kind of put on that scene in general. I have features for Mic Terror and Hollywood Holt on myspace.com/misctimes. Check’em out.
