Spotlight On: The Ettes

When I first heard The Ettes, I was very excited. Here was a band that was bringing back a sound that was such a milestone in music history—rock & roll and punk. In other words, The Ettes are like a well blended mash of Chuck Berry and The Stooges, with a tiny dose of The Ramones and The Bangles. Their music is high energy, worthy of rocking out to, and in some ways, nostalgic of an era in music that was about having fun and creating something different—not about making a sound that will sell millions.

While The Ettes have a tendency to be placed in the “60’s garage band” category, I think they are definitely a step above that. Songs such as “I Get Mine”, make them more rock and roll and easy to listen to than your typical garage band (seeing as the intro to that song sounds somewhat like Chuck Berry’s “Maybellene”). Other songs like “Reputation” are a bit more emblematic of 70’s punk music. Trying to create music from such genres is definitely a challenge, but The Ettes make it seem simple. They know exactly what goes in to making a good rock & roll song, and it is nothing short of impressive.

The Ettes are the type of band you’ll listen to and want to love. Like their predecessors, they’re rock and roll enough to get you dancing, yet raw enough to get you rocking out. Who couldn’t ask for more? Not to mention, they have a pretty boss style that is just as fantastic as their sound (not that we should enjoy bands because of their style–I was just saying).
