Pennywise’s new album, Reason to Believe, has been a success thus far. The band jumped on the bandwagon with many other artists who are now offering their album (or single) to be downloaded for free over a limited period of time. Apparently over 600,000 people signed up to download Reason to Believe, which far exceeded the expectations of the band. If you missed out on the free downloading extravaganza, you can get the album on itunes or Amazon.

For people who have downloaded the album–any thoughts? Do you like the whole “free download for a limited time” option? Let us know what you think!

I think free downloading has its advantages and disadvantages. But hey, the same can be said about life. I think every artist is out there just for the music at first, but some (obviously) let the fame get to their head once they get a taste of the fame and money. I do believe that the free downloading for a limited time does get some exposure out there, it’s a good tactic. It gets your name in the public.
And I think that’s what every new upcoming artist wants, their name in the public.

Good point, Rebecka. I agree that free song downloads do help spread the word in some sense, although most of the bands that have been doing this have been more mainstream bands that already have a prominent fanbase (such as Pennywise and Radiohead). For smaller bands, it’s more logical not to have songs for download, thereby increasing the number of times the song has been listened to on places such as MySpace and purevolume, which is where those ritzy major label business executives go to look for “the next best thing”. I think artists are doing the free download thing for a number of other reasons, but I want to hear everyone elses’ first! :]
