I’m not going to lie–the first time I heard Santogold, I couldn’t help but feel she was a rip of M.I.A. Granted, both artists are in relatively the same genre and are friends and all, but there was something about L.E.S. Artistes that I absolutely wasn’t feeling and it made me want to stay clear away from Santogold and call her an “M.I.A. wannabe”.

But this is the beauty of hearing one track that can turn everything around.

As I hang my head in shame, I can’t believe I doubted Santogold. She’s amazing, talented, and her new song, “Lights Out”, is dang catchy. The track has a more indie beat and is quite grooveable–not to mention, it could easily be placed on our Top 8 for the Summer of ‘08 list, if it wasn’t for the fact that we have already filled the last two spots (you’ll have to stay posted to figure out who they are!). As for the music video itself, it’s pretty stripped down and simple, just like the song. The most “complex” aspect about the video is all the flashy patterns and weird camera shots, which really just makes the video more artistic than anything else.

But hey, why don’t you watch it for yourself.

Like I said, I’m admitting that I was wrong for having my doubts about Santogold because this song and music video totally bought me. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one that cried “M.I.A. wannabe!”…and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one that’s going to hear this song and see this video and fall in love and feel stupid for not liking Santogold sooner.
